Piltdown Man

Sadly, I didn’t keep track of where I came across this phrase, but I had never seen it before and couldn’t divine its meaning from the sentence.  It wasn’t very hard to find out about this phrase, though.  The Piltdown Man was the name given to a fraudulent fossil supposedly found in the English city of Piltdown in 1912.  In actuality it was no more than a human skull and the jaw of an ape.  Amazingly, it took over forty years to expose the fraud.
