Emmet

This is another word that I found on a Tuesday crossword puzzle and it completely destroyed my day.  Never but in crossword puzzles have I seen this archaic word for ant.  Doing some research on the O.E.D., however, I discovered that this word is the origin of the word ant.  Ant ultimately comes from the old English emete (through emmet) meaning a “cutter off, or biter off.”
