callipygous

December 19, 2011

A great word from Anu Garg’s Word of the Day.  Callipygous means having well-formed buttocks coming from the Greek meaning “beautiful ass.”  This is not to be confused with dasypygal, meaning having a hairy ass or steatopygia, meaning having a fat ass.  What a wonderful language the Greeks have.

Tmesis

Anu Garg’s amazing word of the day meaning the insertion of a word into another.  For example: abso-fucking-lutly.

Cwm

September 8, 2009

A great word to get you out of a fix in Scrabble perhaps, cwm was the word-of-the-day on Anu Garg’s wonderful website, wordsmith.org, not so long ago.  Cwm is a Welsh word, of course.  It is pronounced “koom,” and it is a  “steep bowl-shaped mountain basin, carved by glaciers. Also known as cirque.”  Garg gives a picture of a cwm as well that can be seen here.

Birl

August 20, 2009

A wonderful word from Anu Garg’s wonderful Word of the Day emails.  To birl is to rotate a floating log by running on it. It is a far better word than its practical brother logrolling.  Birling is the only true name for such a sport.
